Tire rotation and wheel balancing are two of the most commonly skipped maintenance services — and two of the ones with the biggest impact on how long your tires last and how your vehicle handles. Here's what you need to know.
Tire rotation: every 8,000–10,000 km
Your tires don't wear evenly. Front tires carry the weight of the engine and handle steering, so they typically wear faster than rear tires — especially on front-wheel drive vehicles. Rotating the tires moves each one to a different position on the vehicle, distributing the wear more evenly across all four.
The result: all four tires last longer, and you avoid the situation where your fronts wear out while your rears still have plenty of tread. Most manufacturers recommend rotating every 8,000–10,000 km, or at every oil change.
Wheel balancing: when you feel it, or when you install new tires
Wheel balancing corrects small weight imbalances in a tire-and-wheel assembly. Over time — or after hitting a pothole or curb — these imbalances cause vibration, uneven wear, and extra stress on your steering and suspension components.
Signs you need balancing include steering wheel vibration (usually at 80–110 km/h), unusual wear patterns on the tread, and a vehicle that feels less stable at highway speeds. Balancing is also standard practice whenever new tires are installed.
The easiest time to do both: your seasonal changeover
If you run winter and summer tires, your seasonal changeover is the ideal time to combine a rotation with a balance check. You're already swapping the tires — it adds minimal time and makes sure everything is set correctly for the season ahead.
Mobile Tire Centre can handle both services at your location during a changeover appointment. Book online or call 1-888-680-0005 to schedule.
What happens if you skip it?
Skipping rotations shortens tire life and can lead to uneven wear that makes replacement necessary sooner. Skipping balancing causes vibration that eventually damages wheel bearings and suspension components — repairs that cost significantly more than a balance service. Staying on schedule is simply the cheaper and safer choice.
