What to Do When You Get a Flat Tire in Waterloo Region

A flat tire rarely happens at a convenient time. Whether you're heading to work on a cold Tuesday morning or driving home late at night, knowing exactly what to do in the first few minutes makes the situation much safer and easier to manage.

1. Don't panic — and don't slam the brakes

If a tire blows or goes flat while you're driving, keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and ease off the accelerator gradually. Do not brake hard — this can cause you to lose control. Let the vehicle slow naturally while steering smoothly to the side of the road.

2. Get to a safe location

Pull completely off the road onto a shoulder, parking lot, or side street. Avoid stopping on a curve, hill, or narrow lane where other vehicles can't see you. Turn on your hazard lights as soon as you recognize the problem.

3. Assess the situation

Once you're safely stopped, take a moment before getting out of the vehicle — especially on a busy road. If you're in a safe spot, you can inspect the tire. Look for the cause: a nail, screw, or visible puncture in the tread area is often repairable. A blowout or sidewall damage is not.

4. Decide: spare tire, repair, or call for help

If you have a full-size spare and the tools to change it safely, and you're in a secure location, you can swap it yourself. If you have a temporary spare (donut), use it to get to a service location — they're not designed for long distances or highway speeds.

If you don't have a usable spare, or you're not confident changing a tire in your current location, the safest move is to call for help. Mobile Tire Centre can come to you — whether you're in a driveway, parking lot, or roadside location across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, or Guelph.

5. Call Mobile Tire Centre

We carry common tire sizes on our service vans and can repair or replace your tire on the spot in many cases. That means no towing, no waiting at a shop, and no arranging a ride. Call us at 1-888-680-0005 and we'll dispatch a technician to your location.

Prevention: what to check before it happens

Most flat tires are preventable with basic maintenance. Check your tire pressure monthly — underinflated tires are more vulnerable to punctures and damage. Inspect your tread depth regularly and watch for sidewall cracks or bulges that signal a tire is past its safe service life. If you're unsure about the condition of your tires, contact us for an inspection.
